Where it began

The outback taught us everything.

In 2013, David Solkowski was Safety Manager, publisher and editor of Take 5 Stay Alive — a daily newsletter delivered to 540 field team members across five remote mining camps at Roper Bar NT, 292 kilometres from Katherine and a two-hour return flight from Darwin.

No phone reception. No PowerPoint. No sign-off sheets. Just plain English on a breakfast table every morning — and a team that looked out for each other.

"Life at Roper Bar was extraordinary. That's what Take 5 Media is built on — and what we bring to every organisation we work with today."

That newsletter — human, practical, daily — is the blueprint for everything Take 5 Media delivers in 2026. Now applied to the most urgent challenge facing Australian workplaces: mental health.

David Solkowski — Founder, Take 5 Media
David Solkowski
Founder · Take 5 Media · Est. 2009

Thirty years across health, fitness, service management, and safety — culminating in a 16-year career as a Safety Manager on some of Australia's most remote and demanding projects. Born in Canada. Made in the Australian outback.

At Roper Bar NT, David managed safety for 540 workers across five camps and 176 kilometres of haul road — and published a daily newsletter that became the model for Take 5 Media today. The Thiess Safety Excellence Award for Roper Bar sits on the wall as a reminder of what's possible when you put people first.

Today David is building what he intends to be the largest mental health intervention of its kind — a nationally standardised model across NSW and QLD Health, targeting 100,000 people who've experienced trauma, depression, and anxiety. Not because it's a business opportunity. Because it needs to exist.

As we all said at one time or another — Take 5, Bruz.

One conversation. That's all it takes.

Take 5 Media works with health services, industrial organisations and corporate teams across Australia.
